解説 Definition

形容詞などが名詞の前後に直接置かれ、その名詞を修飾する用法の。文法用語として使われる。

Describes a word, especially an adjective, that directly modifies a noun rather than following a linking verb. In English, it commonly appears before the noun, as happy does in a happy child.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

attribute には「属性」という名詞の意味があり、attributive は「名詞に属性を直接付ける」と考えると理解しやすい語です。a happy child の happy のように名詞に直接付く限定用法を指します。The child is happy の happy は predicative「叙述用法の」です。この二つを対にし、attributive position/adjective という組み合わせで覚えると定着しやすくなります。

Connect attributive with attribute: the adjective directly gives an attribute to a noun. Compare happy in a happy child with happy in The child is happy, where it is predicative. Learn the phrases attributive adjective and attributive position.

attributive の語源・成り立ち Etymology

後期ラテン語 attributivus「属性を付与する」に由来します。基となる attribute はラテン語 attribuere「割り当てる」から来ており、ad-「〜へ」と tribuere「与える」から成ります。名詞に性質を与える働きを示す語です。

It comes from Late Latin attributivus, meaning “assigning an attribute.” Its base is related to Latin attribuere, formed from ad- meaning “to” and tribuere meaning “give or assign.”
