copter は helicopter を後ろだけ残して縮めた口語形です。元の helicopter はフランス語 hélicoptère を経て、ギリシャ語 helix「らせん」＋ pteron「翼」に由来し、本来は「らせん翼」の意でした。helix や pterodactyl を知ると、回転翼で飛ぶ乗り物だと腑に落ちます。
