Cytology is the branch of biology and medicine that studies cells, their structure, and how they work. It is often used in science research and medical testing to examine cells from the body. The word is mainly used in academic and healthcare contexts.

まず `-logy` が付くので、biology / geology と同じ「〜学」の仲間だと押さえる。前半の `cyto-` は cytoplasm（細胞質）、cytotoxic（細胞毒性）、leukocyte（白血球）などにも出るので、医学生物系では「細胞に関する語の目印」としてまとめて覚えると効率がよい。つまり cytology は「細胞を観察し、構造や異常を調べる学問」。histology は組織、anatomy は体の構造全体で、対象の細かさが違うと比べると混同しにくい。

Cytology comes from Greek kytos, meaning "hollow vessel" or "container," plus -logy, "the study of." The element cyto- appears in words like cytoplasm and leukocyte. The image of a cell as a small container holding material inside led to the name for the study of cells.
