生物の組織の構造と機能を研究する学問。顕微鏡を使って細胞や組織を詳細に調べます。
覚え方のコツ
histology は biology, geology, psychology と同じ -logy「学問」の形なので、まず「何かを研究する分野」だと押さえると記憶しやすい。核になる histo- は history や hospital と無関係で、ここでは「体の組織」を指すと割り切るのがコツ。出やすい場面は tissue sample, microscopic examination, cell and tissue structure など、顕微鏡で組織を観察する文脈。anatomy が体の形を大づかみに見るのに対し、histology はもっと細かい組織レベル、pathology は異常や病変を見る語、と並べて覚えると混同しにくい。

histology はギリシャ語 histos「織物・組織」と -logy「学問」から。もともと「織られたもの」という感覚が体の組織へ広がり、顕微鏡で組織の成り立ちを調べる学問名になった。tissue, textile も同じ発想を感じさせる。
