opticsはギリシャ語optikos「見ることに関する」が語源で、さらにops/opt-「目・視覚」にさかのぼります。-icsは学問分野を表し、opticalやoptometristも同じopt-を共有するので、「見る仕組みを扱う学」が光学だと分かります。
Optics comes from Greek optikos, meaning "related to seeing," from ops or opt-, meaning "eye" or "sight." The ending -ics marks a field of study. So the word originally meant the science of vision, and later became the science of light as well. Related English words include optical and optometrist.
