Optics is the area of science that studies light, vision, and lenses. It can also refer to the system of lenses in a device such as a camera, microscope, or telescope.

optical（光学の）を知っていれば、optics はその名詞版で「光や見え方を扱うもの」とつながる。-ics は physics, economics のように学問・体系名でよく出る形なので、まず「光学系・光学」が基本。そこから比喩で、政治や広報では「中身が正しいか」より「外からどう見えるか」という意味にも広がる。bad optics は「印象が悪い」、public optics は「世間からの見え方」。science と image の二本立てで覚えると混同しにくい。

opticsはギリシャ語optikos「見ることに関する」が語源で、さらにops/opt-「目・視覚」にさかのぼります。-icsは学問分野や体系を表し、opticalやoptometristも同じopt-を共有するので、「光を通して見る仕組み」から光学系、さらに「見え方・印象」までつながります。
Optics comes from Greek optikos, meaning "related to seeing," from ops or opt-, meaning "eye" or "sight." The ending -ics marks a field of study. So the word originally meant the science of vision, and later became the science of light as well. Related English words include optical and optometrist.
