tough を知っていれば、その名詞形だと捉えるのが最短です。toughness = tough + -ness で『タフさ・粘り強さ』。hardness が単なる『硬さ』なのに対し、toughness は圧力や衝撃を受けても、割れたり折れたりせず持ちこたえる感じを含みます。たとえば glass is hard but not tough と対比すると覚えやすいです。material toughness, mental toughness のように、物にも人にも使える語だとセットで押さえると定着します。
`Toughness` in science is not the same as simple `hardness`. A hard thing can still break easily, but a tough thing keeps holding together under force. Remember it with `fracture toughness` and the contrast with `brittleness`.
