古フランス語 anatomie、さらに後期ラテン語・ギリシャ語 anatomia に由来します。ana-「上へ・ばらばらに」+ temnein「切る」から成り、もとは「切り分けて調べること」。だから anatomy は体そのものより「解剖して構造を知る学問」を表し、関連語に atom, anatomize があります。
Anatomy came into English through Old French and Late Latin from Greek anatomia. It is made from ana- "up" or "apart" and temnein "to cut," so its earliest sense was "cutting up for examination."
