physiology はギリシャ語 physis「自然・生命のあり方」と -logy「学問」から成り、ラテン語経由で英語に入りました。もともとは「自然の働きを学ぶこと」で、体の機能の仕組みを扱う学問という今の意味に結びつきます。関連語に physics、physical があります。
