実際に存在すると言うより、話を進めるために仮に置いた条件や人物、状況を表す語。議論、授業、法律、ビジネスなどで、もし〜ならという想定の例を示すときによく使う。現実の事実説明ではなく、考え方を試したり結論の影響を検討したりする文脈に合う。
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
hypothesis（仮説）を知っていれば、その形容詞が hypothetical とつながります。まず『仮説ベースの話』『まだ事実ではない話』とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。頻出は hypothetical question / situation / scenario で、どれも『もし〜ならという仮の設定』で使われます。theoretical が『理論上の』なのに対し、hypothetical は『仮にそうだとして考える』という想像・条件設定寄りの語、と分けて覚えると混同しにくいです。
