Counterfactual describes something that is based on an imagined situation that did not actually happen. It is often used in history, philosophy, and science when discussing what would be true under different conditions. The word usually refers to ideas or statements, not real facts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず fact「事実」を芯に置き、factual で「事実ベースの」と取る。そこに counter-「反対・逆らう」が付くので、counterfactual は「事実に反する想定」。単なる hypothetical が広く“仮の話”を指せるのに対し、これは“実際には起きなかった現実を逆向きに置き換えて考える”語。counterfactual thinking, a counterfactual scenario の形で見て、「if ... had ...」の反実仮想と結び付けると定着しやすい。
Break it into `counter` + `factual`. If `factual` means based on fact, then `counterfactual` points against the facts of reality. It is easy to remember with `if ... had ...` sentences and phrases like `counterfactual thinking`.

counterfactual は counter-「反対の」＋ factual「事実の」で成る語で、factual はラテン語 factum「なされたこと」に由来します。つまり「事実に反する想定」という形そのままの意味で、fact や manufacture も同じ fact 系の語です。
Counterfactual is formed from counter- "against, opposite" and factual. Factual comes from fact, which goes back to Latin factum, meaning "something done." So the word was built to mean something set against the facts, and it is related to English words like fact and manufacture.
