ghat はヒンディー語 ghat から英語に入り、さらにさかのぼるとサンスクリット語 ghatta「船着き場・降り口」に由来します。もとは山道の下り口や川へ降りる場所を指したので、そこから「川岸へ続く石段」という意味になったと考えると納得しやすい語です。
