In chemistry, an aryl group is a part of a molecule that comes from an aromatic ring, such as benzene. It is used in technical writing about chemical structure and reactions. This is a specialist scientific term rather than an everyday word.

aryl は aromatic の ar- と化学接尾辞 -yl から成り、「芳香族由来の基」を表します。aromatic はギリシャ語 aroma「香り」にさかのぼり、aroma や aromatic と見ると、もとは匂いで括られた化合物群から aryl が生まれたと分かります。
Aryl was created in chemistry from aromatic plus the suffix -yl, which is often used for chemical groups. Aromatic goes back to Greek aroma, meaning "spice" or "fragrance." The sense developed because these compounds were first grouped by their noticeable smell, and later aryl came to name the group derived from such aromatic compounds.
