waft は中期オランダ語・中低ドイツ語系の語にさかのぼり、古くは「風に乗せてそっと運ぶ」が原義。だから、主体が強く動くというより、匂いや煙が空気に押されて自然に「漂う」感じを表す。関連語は wafting、wafted。
`waft` comes from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German words connected with carrying something lightly through the air. Its early sense was to move or bear along gently, especially by wind. From that idea, it came to describe smells, smoke, or sounds drifting softly rather than moving with force.
