古英語 hyrdel「柵・障害物」にさかのぼる hurdle に、行為者の -er が付いた語です。つまり hurdler は「柵を越える人」で、牧畜用の囲いが競技の障害へ転じたと分かると意味が腑に落ちます。hurdle や hurdling が同根です。
Hurdler comes from hurdle plus the agent ending -er. Hurdle goes back to Old English hyrdel, meaning a movable fence or barrier. Because the word first referred to a physical barrier, it later became the name of the obstacle in racing, and hurdler meant the person who jumps over it.
