benzyl は benz- + 化学接尾辞 -yl「基・ラジカル」から成ります。benz- は benzoin「安息香樹脂」に由来し、さらにアラビア語で「ジャワの香」を意味する語へさかのぼるため、もとは樹脂名から育った化学語です。関連語は benzene, benzoic。
Benzyl is made from benz- and the chemical suffix -yl, which marks a radical or group. The benz- part comes from benzoin, a resin name that ultimately goes back through Arabic expressions referring to aromatic resin from the East. So the word began with the name of a resin and later became part of modern chemical naming, as in benzene and benzoic.
