benzoic は benzoin + -ic から成る化学語で、benzoin はフランス語 benjoin を経てアラビア語 luban jawi「ジャワの香」に通じます。-ic は「〜に関する」で、もとは安息香由来の酸だったと分かると意味が見え、benzoin や benzene も同系です。
Benzoic was formed from benzoin with the adjective ending -ic. Benzoin came into English through French benjoin and goes back to Arabic luban jawi, meaning "incense of Java." The word originally referred to a substance obtained from benzoin resin, and later became the chemical name; benzoin and benzene are related in form and history.
