methyl は化学で、メチル基を指す語です。日本語の「メチル」とほぼ同じ意味ですが、英語では methyl alcohol や methyl group のように他の語を修飾して使われることが多いです。
Methyl refers to the chemical group CH₃–, derived conceptually from methane by removing one hydrogen atom. The word is also used before another noun in names of compounds or substances, as in methyl alcohol or methyl group.

The chemical element methyl was named in the nineteenth century from roots associated with Greek methy, “wine,” and hylē, “wood.” The formation reflected the historical connection with methanol, once called wood alcohol because it was obtained through the destructive distillation of wood.
