patois はフランス語 patois に由来し、古フランス語 patoier「手ぶりまじりに話す・ぶっきらぼうにしゃべる」にさかのぼるとされます。洗練された標準語でなく「土地の話し方」を指すようになった語で、関連語に patte「足・手」、patoyer があります。
