解説 Definition
専門用語とは、特定の分野や職業でのみ使われる特殊な言葉や表現のことです。医学、法律、IT等の分野ごとに独特の語彙があります。
Lingo is an informal word for the special language, words, or expressions used by a particular group. It is common in jobs, hobbies, or social groups. This language may be easy for insiders to understand but difficult for others.

lingo は linguist（言語学者）や bilingual の lingu- と結びつけると覚えやすく、「language 系の語だ」と先に見抜くのがコツ。そのうえで、ただの language ではなく、特定の分野や仲間内で通じる言い回しを指す語だと押さえる。tech lingo, legal lingo のように分野名と結びつけると定着しやすい。なお、かたい用語集のような terminology よりくだけており、難解さを強く感じさせる jargon とも少し違う。
`Lingo` looks and sounds close to other language words like `linguist` and `bilingual`, so use that as your memory hook. Then remember it usually means the special way a group speaks, not language in general. Phrases like `tech lingo` and `legal lingo` are easy to keep in mind.

lingo の語源・成り立ち Etymology
lingo はラテン語 lingua「舌・言語」にさかのぼり、lingua franca の短縮・変形とも考えられます。語幹 lingu- は「ことば」を表し、linguist や bilingual と同根なので、「舌」が「話し方」へ広がって専門用語を指す流れが見えます。
Lingo goes back to Latin lingua, meaning "tongue" and also "language." It may have been shaped by the phrase lingua franca, then shortened and altered in everyday speech. The meaning moved from "language" in general to a particular way of speaking, especially the special words of a group. Related words include linguist and bilingual.
