lingo はラテン語 lingua「舌・言語」にさかのぼり、lingua franca の短縮・変形とも考えられます。語幹 lingu- は「ことば」を表し、linguist や bilingual と同根なので、「舌」が「話し方」へ広がって専門用語を指す流れが見えます。
