identify「見分けて特定する」が土台。identity（身元）と同じ仲間だと押さえると、un- が付いた unidentified はそのまま「特定されていない」。unknown は単に「知られていない」だが、unidentified は警察報道やニュースで「誰なのか・何なのかを確認中」という響きが強い。an unidentified man, an unidentified body, an unidentified flying object の形で頻出。identify→identified→unidentified と段階で、確認済み／未確認の対比として覚えると定着しやすい。

unidentified は un-「〜でない」＋ identified から成ります。identify はラテン語 idem「同じ」＋ facere「作る」に由来し、「同じものだと認める」が出発点です。identity や identical を知ると、「未確認」の感覚がはっきりします。
Unidentified is made from un- "not" and identified. Identify comes from Late Latin roots meaning "to make the same," based on idem "same" and facere "to make." So unidentified originally means not recognized as the same known thing, which is easier to see if you know identity and identical.
