注意を払わず、うっかりしている状態。細かいことに気を配らない、不用心な態度を指します。
Careless describes someone who does not pay enough attention and makes mistakes because of that. It is often used for actions, work, or behavior that seem irresponsible or not thoughtful. The word usually suggests that more care was needed.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
care を知っていれば核は「気を配る」。そこに -less が付くと「その性質がない」なので、careless は「気配りがない」→「不注意な」とつながる。careful「注意深い」と対にして覚えると定着しやすい。さらに carefree は「心配がない」で前向きだが、careless は「注意がない」で危ない、という差も重要。a careless mistake, careless driving のように、故意ではなく注意不足で雑にミスする場面でよく使う。
Think of `care` + `-less`: without care. That makes it easy to connect with `careful`, which is its clear opposite. Also remember the contrast with `carefree`: `carefree` sounds positive, but `careless` usually leads to mistakes.

carelessはcare+ -lessで、careは古英語caru「心配・気づかい」、-lessは「欠いた」を表す。carefulやcarefreeも同根で、本来は「気づかいがない」が、注意を払うべき所に心が向かないので「不注意な」になった。
