ethic はギリシャ語 ethos「習慣・性格」が源で、-ic は「〜に関する」です。つまり倫理とは外から押しつける規則より、身についた振る舞いの型という感覚が土台にあります。ethos や ethical も同じ語根です。
Ethic comes from Greek `ethos`, meaning "custom," "habit," or "character," with `-ic` meaning "related to."
