Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomes and how they affect heredity, cell function, and disease. It combines ideas from genetics and cell biology. This field is often used in medical research and in testing for genetic disorders.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず genetics が見えれば「遺伝学」の仲間だと取れます。そこに cyto- が付くので、「遺伝を細胞レベルで見る分野」とまとめると覚えやすいです。biology の中で、gene そのものを追うというより、顕微鏡で細胞や染色体を見ながら遺伝の異常や特徴を調べる場面を連想すると定着します。cytology（細胞学）と genetics（遺伝学）の合体語、と分けて見るのがコツです。
Split it into `cyto-` and `genetics`. `Cyto-` relates to cells, and `genetics` is about genes and inheritance, so the word combines both ideas. It is easier to remember if you imagine scientists studying chromosomes inside cells, not just genes in the abstract.

cytogenetics は cyto-「細胞」+ genetics「遺伝学」から成る語です。cyto- はギリシャ語 kytos「容器・細胞」、gen- は「生む」に由来するので、「細胞の中で遺伝がどう現れるか」を見る学問だと腑に落ちます。cytology や gene も近縁です。

Cyto- comes from Greek kytos, originally meaning something like a hollow vessel or container, and gen- comes from a root meaning "to produce" or "beget."
