dormouse の語源・成り立ち Etymology
dormouse はおそらくアングロ・フランス語系で、核は dormir／ラテン語 dormire「眠る」。後半は mouse と結び直され、冬眠気味で「眠そうなネズミ」と見えたことが名前に刻まれた。dormant や dormitory も同じ dorm- を持つ。
Dormouse probably came into English through Anglo-French, from a word linked to French dormir and Latin dormire, both meaning "to sleep." The second part was later reshaped to look like mouse, even though the animal name was not originally built from that English word. Its long periods of sleep helped strengthen the idea of a "sleepy mouse." Related English words include dormant and dormitory.
