mouse は、コンピューターを操作するためのマウスという意味です。英語では動物の「ネズミ」も同じ mouse ですが、この語義では機器を指します。日本語の「マウス」とほぼ同じ意味で使われます。
A mouse is a small hand-operated pointing device used to control a cursor and select items on a computer. It commonly has buttons and may also include a scroll wheel.

古英語 mūs からゲルマン祖語 *mūs を経てラテン語 mūs、ギリシャ語 mŷs に遡る。印欧祖語 *muHs（盗む者）が原義で、こっそり食料を盗む小動物を指した。関連語：muscle（筋肉の動きがネズミに似ることから同根）。
Mouse comes from Old English mūs and belongs to an ancient Indo-European family of words for the small animal. The computer sense arose in the twentieth century because the early device’s compact body and trailing cord suggested a mouse and its tail. The remotely related word muscle ultimately comes from Latin musculus, literally “little mouse,” based on the visual comparison of a moving muscle under the skin to a mouse.
