ネズミ/マウス(複数)
解説 Definition
mice は mouse(ネズミ、コンピューターのマウス)の複数形です。ネズミを表す場合は通常 mice を使い、mouse が mice に変わる不規則な形です。コンピューターのマウスでは mice のほかに mouses が使われることもあります。
This plural noun refers to two or more small rodents with pointed noses and long tails. It also refers to handheld devices used to move a pointer on a computer screen.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
mouse の複数は、ネズミなら基本的に mice。中の音と綴りが大きく変わる mouse→mice を、man→men と同じ「中身が変わる」型として覚えましょう。コンピューターのマウスでは mouses も見かけますが、まずは標準的な mice を押さえると安心です。
Remember mouse → mice as a change inside the word, like man → men, rather than simply adding -s. Use mice for more than one of the animals. For computer devices, you may also encounter mouses, but mice works for this meaning too.

mice の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 mūs(単数形)の複数形 mȳs が現代英語の mice になった。印欧祖語 *mūs に遡り、ラテン語 mus、サンスクリット語 mūṣ とも同根。関連語:mouse(単数形)、muscle(筋肉、ラテン語 musculus=小さなネズミ)。筋肉が皮膚の下で動く様子がネズミに見えたことに由来する。
The word developed from Old English mȳs, the plural of mūs. Its roots go back to Proto-Indo-European *mūs, which also underlies Latin mus and Sanskrit mūṣ.
