executed の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 exsequi(最後まで追う)から。ex-(完全に)+ sequi(従う・追う)で「最後まで遂行する」が原義。古フランス語 executer を経て英語に入った。関連語: sequence, consequence。計画を最後まで追い遂げるという意味から「実行する」、さらに判決を遂行する意で「処刑する」の意味も生まれた。
Executed is formed from execute plus the past-tense and participial ending -d. Execute entered English through Old French executer from Latin exsequi, meaning “to follow through” or “pursue to completion.” That Latin verb combines ex- with sequi, “to follow,” also seen historically in sequence and consequence. The core idea of following something through produced the sense “carry out a plan or order.” A separate legal development produced the meaning of carrying out a death sentence.
