封建時代の領主が支配する領地。転じて、個人が排他的に支配する領域や組織。
A fiefdom was originally an area of land controlled by a lord in the feudal system. In modern use, it can also mean a place, group, or area of work that one person controls too much as if it were their own private domain.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず語尾の -dom を kingdom と同じ「支配領域・王国」の感覚で押さえると覚えやすいです。前半の fief は単独では難しくても、feudal（封建的な）と結びつけると「封建領主の支配する domain」という像が作れます。そこから literal には「領地」、比喩では「その人だけが牛耳る縄張り・独占領域」。会社や部署について one’s own fiefdom と出ると、「勝手に支配している持ち場」という含みを持ちやすい点も記憶フックになります。
The ending `-dom` is the same idea as in `kingdom`: an area under control. That makes `fiefdom` easier to remember as a controlled territory or domain. In modern English, it is often used for a person's private area of power, not only old historical land.

fiefdom は fief「封土」+ -dom「領域・支配状態」。fief は古フランス語を経てゲルマン系の「財産」にさかのぼり、feudal も同根、-dom は kingdom と同じなので、「財産として与えられた土地の支配圏」と考えると領地の意味が見える。
Fiefdom is formed from fief and the suffix -dom, meaning "state" or "domain," as in kingdom. Fief came through Old French and goes back to a Germanic source connected with property or possession. The sense developed into "the territory held as a granted possession." It is related in origin to feudal.
