評価や公式な格付けがまだ与えられていない状態を表す形容詞。金融では債券などが格付け未取得であることを指し、映画や映像作品では審査区分が付いていない、または劇場公開版より制限の少ない特別版を指すことがある。
If something is unrated, it has not been officially judged, classified, or given a score. This is common for films, shows, products, or financial items. In entertainment, it often means no age rating has been assigned.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
`un-` は「否定」、`rate` は「評価する」、`rating` は「格付け・レーティング」。この3つがつながれば、`unrated` は「まだ評価が付いていない」とそのまま取れます。`rated` が「評価済み」なので、その反対と覚えると強いです。映画なら `an unrated version` で「レーティング未指定版」、金融なら `unrated bonds` で「格付け未取得の債券」。似た形の `underrated` は「過小評価された」で別物なので、`unrated`＝評価ゼロ、`underrated`＝評価はあるが低すぎる、と切り分けると混同しにくいです。
Connect it to `rate` and `rating`. If something is `rated`, it has already been judged or given a score; `unrated` means no rating has been given. Keep it separate from `underrated`, which means rated too low, not `not rated`.

unrated は否定の un-（Old English）と、中世ラテン語 rata「計算された評価額」にさかのぼる rate に -ed が付いた語です。rate や rating も同根で、もとは「数えて値を決める」感覚なので、「まだ評価が付いていない」と意味がつながります。
`Unrated` is made from `un-` and `rated`. `Rate` came through French and Medieval Latin from a root meaning something like "fixed calculation" or "assessed value," so it originally had the sense of setting a value by counting or judging. From that, `unrated` came to mean something that has not yet been given such an assessment.
