Sleeplessness is the condition of being unable to sleep or not getting enough sleep. It is commonly used in health and everyday life when talking about stress, illness, or poor sleep habits. It can describe either a short-term problem or a continuing one.

まず sleep が見えれば土台は十分です。英語では -less が「〜がない」、-ness が「その状態」を作るので、sleeplessness はまとめて「眠りがない状態」と取れます。覚えるときは sleepless night は『眠れない夜』、sleeplessness は『夜が何度も続く不眠状態』と場面で分けると定着しやすいです。sleepy「眠い」と形が近いので、sleepy は眠気がある、sleepless は逆に眠れない、と対比で固定すると混同しにくくなります。
