古英語 on slǣpe（眠りの状態に）が短縮された形。接頭辞 a- は「～の状態に」を意味し、sleep（眠り）と結合。同じ a- を持つ語に alive（生きている）、awake（目覚めた）がある。「眠りという状態の中にある」が原義で、a- + 状態名の典型的パターン。
Asleep comes from an older phrase in Old English, on slǣpe, meaning "in a state of sleep." Over time, on was reduced to a-, a common prefix in words showing a state, as in awake and alive. So the original sense was simply "in sleep."
