まず lunge を、ジムの「ランジ」の動きやフェンシングで相手に一歩深く踏み込む場面と結びつけると残りやすいです。run がただ走る動きなのに対し、lunge は「狙って一気に前へ出る」感じが強い語。-ing が付いた lunging は「突進している／飛びかかるように迫る」。a dog lunging at a man, lunging forward など、怒った犬や選手がぐっと体を前へ投げ出す絵で覚えると定着します。似た形の plunging は「突っ込む・急落する」で別語なので混同注意。
