fifer は fife（横笛）+ -er（〜する人）。fife は古フランス語 fifre を経てドイツ語 Pfeife「笛・パイプ」にさかのぼり、pipe や piper も同系です。『笛という道具を吹く人』が、そのまま職能名になった語です。
