Forged is formed from forge plus -d, pronounced without an extra syllable. Associate forged steel with metal shaped by heat and force, and a forged signature or forged passport with something falsely produced to appear genuine. The surrounding noun usually makes the intended sense clear.

forged の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古フランス語 forgier から、さらにラテン語 fabricare(作り上げる)に遡る。fabrica(工房)が語根で、鍛冶場で金属を打って形作ることが原義。関連語は fabricate(でっち上げる)、fabric(織物・構造)。「偽造された」の意味も鍛冶の「形を作る」から派生した。

Forged is the past-participle form of forge. Forge came into English through Old French forgier, “to shape or make in a smithy,” from words associated with a workshop and manufacturing, ultimately related to Latin fabrica. Its central image is a smith forming heated metal by repeated blows or pressure. From the broader idea of making something into a desired form, forge later also developed figurative senses, including creating relationships and producing false documents.
