Gabbro is a dark, heavy igneous rock with large mineral grains. It forms when molten rock cools slowly under the ground. The word is mostly used in geology and earth science.

地学語としては、basalt（玄武岩）とセットで覚えると残りやすい語です。basalt が地表近くで急に冷えた黒っぽい岩、gabbro はその「地下でゆっくり冷えて粒が粗くなった版」という位置づけ。暗色・深成岩・粗い結晶という3点をまとめて固定すると忘れにくいです。つづりは gab-bro と二つに切り、bb が重い岩の感じ、-bro は岩石名としてそのまま見慣れるのがコツ。granite より黒く重い寄り、という対比も有効です。

gabbro は19世紀に地質学へ入った語で、イタリア語トスカナ方言 gabbro に由来する石工の呼び名です。語源ははっきりしませんが、ラテン語 glaber「なめらかな・むき出しの」に結びつける説もあり、岩石名としてそのまま英語化されたと考えると理解しやすいです。関連語は gabbroic。
