basaltは後期ラテン語basaltesに由来し、さらにギリシャ語basanites「試金石」へさかのぼります。金を試すほど硬い黒石の名が、黒く硬い火成岩の名へ移った語で、関連語にbasanite・basanizeがあります。
Basalt comes from late Latin basaltes, which goes back to Greek basanites, the name of a hard dark stone used as a touchstone for testing gold.
