swain は古ノルド語 sveinn「若者・従者」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *swainaz にさかのぼります。もとはただの「若い男」だった語が恋愛詩で「娘に仕える男」へ寄って「求婚者」になったと見ると納得でき、北欧名 Sven も同じ語根です。
Swain comes from Old Norse sveinn, meaning "young man" or "servant," and goes back to an older Germanic root. At first it simply meant a boy or young man. In poetry and romance language, it later came to mean a man courting a woman. The Scandinavian name Sven comes from the same root.
