volcanic はフランス語 volcanique、さらにイタリア語 vulcanico を経て volcano から来た語。volcano はローマ神話の火の神 Vulcanus に由来し、vulcanize も同根。つまり「火の神のもの」という感覚が、「火山性の」という意味につながっている。
Volcanic comes from volcano, through French and Italian forms such as volcanique and vulcanico. Volcano is linked to Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire and metalwork.
