深成の、または深いマグマが冷却してできた岩石。ゆっくり冷却された火成岩を指します。
Plutonic means relating to igneous rock that formed deep below the Earth's surface from slowly cooling magma. It is a geology term used to describe underground rock formation rather than volcanic activity at the surface. Because of this, plutonic rocks usually have large visible crystals.

plutonic はギリシャ神話の冥界神 Pluto（ギリシャ語 Plouton）に由来し、地下深くに関わる語として地質学で「深成の」の意になりました。語根は plout-「富」で、地下の鉱物の豊かさとも結びつきます。関連語に Pluto、plutonism があります。
Plutonic comes from Pluto, from Greek Plouton, the god of the underworld. The name is linked to ploutos, meaning "wealth," probably because riches and minerals were thought to come from beneath the earth. From that idea of the deep underground, the word later developed its geological sense; plutonism is a related term.
