hearsay は hear「聞く」と say「言う」の複合語で、どちらも古英語にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語です。自分で見たのでなく「聞いたことを口にする」感覚から「伝聞」となり、hearing や saying に同じ要素が見えます。
Hearsay is made from hear and say, both old Germanic words that go back to Old English. The basic idea was something heard from others and then repeated, rather than known directly. That sense developed into the modern idea of second-hand report; the same parts appear in hearing and saying.
