`Herstory` was created in the 1970s during the feminist movement as a deliberate play on `history`. It replaces `his` with `her` to criticize the way history was often told mainly from a male point of view. In fact, `history` does not come from `his`; it comes from Greek `historia`, meaning inquiry or knowledge. So the word is a modern political pun rather than a true historical formation.
