hypotenuse はギリシャ語 hypoteinousa「下に張られた線」に由来し、hypo-「下」+ teinein「張る」から成る。直角の向かい側で最も長くぴんと張る辺という像がそのまま斜辺になり、関連語は tension、tendon。
Hypotenuse comes from Greek hypoteinousa, meaning "the line stretched under," from hypo- "under" and teinein "to stretch." The image was of the side stretched opposite the right angle in a triangle. It shares the same stretching root as English words like tension and tendon.
