光線やエネルギーを何かに向かって放射する。放射線やエネルギーを物質に照射する過程のこと。
Irradiate means to expose something to radiation, strong light, or energy. It is often used in science and medicine, for example with food treatment, cancer treatment, or laboratory work. In broader use, it can also mean to shine light on something.

irradiate は ir-（in- の同化形）+ ラテン語 radius「光線・棒の骨」から来ています。つまり「光線を中へ、上へ放つ」で、radiation や radial と同じ radi- だと分かると、「照射する」が光の筋を広げる動作そのものだと見えてきます。
