生物学用語で、ある生物の染色体の数、形、大きさを図式的に示したもの。細胞内の全ての染色体を一定の規則で配列させた標本です。遺伝学的分析に用いられます。
A karyotype is the complete set of chromosomes in a cell or person, shown by their number, size, and shape. Scientists use it to study genes and to check for some genetic conditions. The term is mainly used in biology and medicine.

karyo- は eukaryote / prokaryote の -karyo- と同じで「核」を連想すると覚えやすい。そこに type が付くので、「核の中身を型どおり並べたもの」→ 染色体を一定の順で並べた図、と結び付ける。実際、karyotype は顕微鏡で見た染色体を大きさや形で整理して並べ、異常の有無を確認する文脈で使われる。genotype が遺伝情報そのもの、phenotype が外に現れた特徴なのに対し、karyotype は“染色体の見取り図”と押さえると混同しにくい。
