現地（げんち）とは、実際にある場所、その土地、または特定の地域を指します。事象が発生している場所、または現在いる場所を意味し、「現地の人」「現地調査」など、その場所に関連する事柄を表現する際に使われます。
A locale is a particular place or area, especially one connected with a certain event, activity, or style. In computing, it can also mean the language and regional settings used by a system, such as date, time, and number formats.

locale はフランス語 locale を経て入り、さらにラテン語 locus「場所」にさかのぼります。loc- は「場所」の語根で、local や location と同根です。もともと「ある土地に固有のもの」という感覚から、地域設定の意味になりました。
Locale came into English from French and goes back to Latin locus, meaning "place." It belongs to the same family as local and location. From the idea of a particular place, it later developed the sense of a place-based setting or regional environment.
