Microseconds are units of time equal to one millionth of a second. The term is used in science, computing, and electronics when talking about extremely short periods of time.

micro- は microscope, microorganism などでも見かける「極小」の感覚で覚えると定着しやすい語です。土台は second なので、second → millisecond → microsecond と時間の単位が細かくなる並びで整理すると混乱しません。1,000分の1秒が millisecond、そのさらに1,000分の1が microsecond。microseconds は複数形で、computers respond in microseconds のように、機械の処理速度や精密計測の文脈でよく出ます。milliseconds と取り違えないのがコツです。
Use the scale of time units to remember it: `second` -> `millisecond` -> `microsecond`. A microsecond is even smaller than a millisecond, so think of extremely fast computer actions or precise measurement. The final `-s` just shows the plural form: many microseconds.

ギリシャ語mikros（小さい）とラテン語secunda（2番目の）の合成語。micro-は「100万分の1」を表す国際単位系の接頭辞。1秒の100万分の1という極めて短い時間単位を指す。関連語: microscope（顕微鏡）、millisecond（ミリ秒）。
Microseconds is formed from micro-, from Greek mikros meaning "small," and second, which comes through Latin secunda, originally meaning "following" or "next." In scientific use, micro- came to mean one millionth. The word therefore developed as a time term for a very tiny fraction of a second. Related English words include microscope and millisecond.
