neck and neck の語源・成り立ち Etymology
競馬で馬の首が並ぶほど接近したレースを描写した表現に由来する。首の位置が勝敗を示すため、そこからあらゆる競争の僅差を表す比喩になった。そのため現代英語でも、具体的な情景から抽象的な意味を伝える言い方として残っている。
The phrase comes from horse racing, where the position of the horses' necks shows how close the race is. It later spread to other competitions.
