Necromancy is magic that is supposed to communicate with or control the dead. It is mostly used in stories, myths, fantasy, and discussions of old beliefs. The word has a dark and mysterious feeling.

Necromancy comes from Greek roots: nekros, meaning "dead body" or "dead person," and manteia, meaning "divination." It passed through Late Latin necromantia before entering English. The original sense was divination by speaking with the dead, and this later broadened into the idea of magic involving spirits of the dead; related words include necrosis and necropolis.
