解説 Definition
壊死とは、生体の細胞や組織が病気・損傷・血流不足などによって死滅することです。医学用語として、組織が機能を失って死んだ状態を指し、腐敗を必ず伴うわけではありません。
Necrosis is the death of body tissue or cells because of disease, injury, or lack of blood supply. It is mainly used in medical and scientific contexts. This is a technical word, not one usually used in everyday conversation.

necrosis はギリシャ語 nekros「死体・死んだもの」に、状態を表す -osis が付いた語です。necrotic や necropolis と同じ語根で、「組織が死んだ状態」と考えると壊死の意味がすっと入ります。
Necrosis comes from Greek nekrosis, built from nekros meaning "dead body" or "dead thing" and the suffix -osis for a condition or process.
