梗塞、血流が断絶することにより組織が壊死すること。心筋梗塞や脳梗塞など、血管が詰まることで起こる。
An infarct is an area of tissue that has died because its blood supply was blocked. This word is mainly used in medicine, especially when talking about the heart, brain, or other organs. It names the damaged tissue itself, not just the medical event.

医学ラテン語 infarctus に由来し、ラテン語 in-「中へ」＋ farcire「詰め込む」が語源です。関連語は infarction や farce。血管が詰まって組織が死ぬ病態なので、「中が詰まる」が梗塞の意味にそのままつながります。
From medical Latin infarctus, from Latin in- "into" and farcire "to stuff or cram." The basic image is of something being filled up or blocked inside. That sense later became the medical idea of tissue damaged because a vessel is blocked, as in infarction.
